It’s that time of year to talk about all things Christmas storage! I feel like I was just putting up my decorations, but now I have to take everything down? While it does make me a little sad, it was an amazing holiday break and I’m very excited for the new year! Something about January 1 feels like a breath of fresh air and I’m embracing it with open arms.
Putting away Christmas can be both an art and a science and is much easier when you have the right tools! Today on the blog, I’m sharing the essentials for putting away Christmas so that next year, pulling out your decor is as easy as ever.
Before we get started…What are your traditions?
Is your family the type that has to take all of there decorations down right after Christmas or do you wait until after January 1st? We are somewhere in the middle. Some years I’m anxious to pull everything down, and other years I love to savor the holiday light glow as long as I can. If you prepare in advance, taking down and storing Christmas decor can be super quick and easy and will no longer be a task that you dread.
Organizing Holiday Decor
How To Organize Holiday Decor
- Toss decorations that aren’t working!
As you start to take down the decorations, look at each piece and decide if it is something you are wanting to also use the following year. Don’t store items that you are going to be throwing away or don’t like the next year!
- Make a list.
Right after the holidays is the BEST time to order new decor for the next year. They have some amazing deals at stores that you will not want to miss out on. Make a note of which lights need to be replaced or any other new decor you may want to replace and re-order it. You can even write an email to yourself and schedule it to send to you at the beginning of next season.
- Label the bins.
Labeling and color coding the storage bins is SO important and trust me when I say you will thank yourself the next year. The best part about organizing is that you only have to do the hard work once and then you can re-use the same organized bins every single year! Make sure the labels are nice and visible when they are stored for easy access.
- Purchase the right supplies.
If you don’t have a tree garment bag or an ornament box organizer yet, this is a game changer. Order them now and they will save so much time when taking everything down. These bags also make sure nothing gets damaged while it is stored and everything will stay looking brand new!
- Wrap your decor.
If you start wrapping fragile decor pieces and ornaments, they wouldn’t get damaged in the storage bins. Take care of these pieces and they will last you years and years!
- Vacuum seal linens.
If you have seasonal blankets, bedding, and clothes, start storing them with the holiday decor to save space in your home. Vacuum seal any holiday linens to save space and fill them in with the labeled bins for next year!
When is the best time to buy new decorations?
If you didn’t know this hack already, the best time to buy new Christmas decor is right after Christmas and New Years! You will see discounts more than 70% off because stores are trying to get rid of all their left over holiday decorations. Buy them discounted and then add then when organizing holiday decor. Most people don’t think to buy them at this time but you will save so much money shopping for new items as you take your old ones down for the new year…trust me!
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season surrounded by lots of family and friends! Let’s start the new year off right with organizing holiday decor! No better time to make a new resolution!
