Struggling to find a correct maintenance schedule for your home to keep everything in order? I’ve been there too.
With all the reveals and projects I share, I think the illusion of our “perfect home” makes it seem like there is not a TON of upkeep behind the scenes. Trust me… there is! When Craig and I bought our first home years ago, everything that needed to be kept up with felt like a never-ending list. Now, I have it down to a science and can’t wait to share my schedule with you.
Today on the blog, I’m excited to chat all about my complete home maintenance checklist. While home ownership is not always glamorous, keeping up with routine home maintenance will ensure everything runs smoothly for years to come.
This is a checklist that you can download and print as-is, or you can customize it to fit your family’s needs!
What Is Home Maintenance?
Home maintenance looks different for every home. Depending on your location, home size, specific areas within the home, appliance usage, and special features that require extra care your maintenance needs might vary. However, the goal remains the same: to keep your home in good condition, prevent costly repairs, and ensure it remains a safe and comfortable place to live.
Why Is Regular Maintenance Important?
Regular home maintenance is essential for several reasons:
- Prevents Costly Repairs: Regular checks and maintenance can help you catch minor issues before they become major problems.
- Increases Home Value: Well-maintained homes retain their value much better than if you let certain maintenance tasks slip.
- Enhances Safety: Routine maintenance ensures that all systems in your home are functioning correctly, reducing the risk of accidents.
- Improves Efficiency: Properly maintained appliances and systems run more efficiently, saving you money in the long run. Plus, everything just works exactly the way it should.
How Is This Different From My Cleaning Checklist?
I’ve talked on and off about our family’s cleaning checklist for as long as I can remember. If you’re curious to learn exactly how we keep our home nice and tidy with five boys, see my Cleaning Checklist here.
The difference between home cleaning and home maintenance is that cleaning involves regular tasks to keep your home tidy and hygienic. Think dusting, vacuuming, and washing the dishes. Maintenance is an umbrella term for all the periodic checks and repairs you need to ensure your home’s systems and structure are functioning correctly.
My Home Maintenance Checklist For Correct Upkeep
This home maintenance checklist is something that has lived in my brain for years. Yes, deep cleaning and inspecting are not the most fun things to do, but after sticking to this checklist, it feels so good to know everything is in order.
What works best for my brain and our home is to separate a yearly schedule into time blocks: monthly, quarterly, and annually. This allows me to check off everything without feeling like a crazy person doing it all over one weekend (spoken from experience).
Here’s how I separate typical tasks by the time they need to be checked:
- Monthly tasks are more about maintaining daily functionality and preventing minor issues from escalating.
- Quarterly tasks bridge the gap between the thorough annual checks and the more routine monthly upkeep.
- Annual tasks are more comprehensive and time-consuming, but they are really important for the long-term and preventing major issues.
How To Customize Checklist For Your Needs
I’ve talked about my love of Canva so many times now (I wrote a whole post on Canva linked here) and how I use it to organize my life. Just like my Cleaning Checklist, I designed my home maintenance checklist on Canva so you can customize it to your own needs.
