I’ve been teasing this reveal for months, but with the boys settled in and going to school, it’s finally time I share!
This year has brought an abundance of change for my boys—enrolling in a new school, settling into a new town, and receiving the best surprise ever: my brother and sister-in-law relocating their entire family from Mesa to just 15 minutes away from us!
While we’ve embraced all these changes, that doesn’t mean they haven’t been overwhelming at times. Moving, by nature, stirs up a lot of upheaval, which is why I make it a priority to set up their room first. We gave their room a mini makeover just before the move, and over the past few weeks, I’ve added the final touches and photographed this space that’s uniquely theirs!
Today on the blog, I’ll be sharing all the details of our little boys’ room design and all the pieces I used to make them feel comfortable in a new space!
Yes… Three Of My Boys Share A Room!
When I shared the photos on my Instagram of the before and after room reveal, one of my top questions was if 3 of my 5 boys actually all live in the same room… yes! They are my three youngest and are similar in age and interests, so they do love being in a room together. Truly, it’s their preference and I’m not complaining!
Before I began arranging their room, I asked them what they wanted to include. Interestingly, they were all on the same page — they loved the look and feel of their previous room! This didn’t come as a surprise to me; while they enjoy helping out now and then (especially if it involves handling tools), their interest in decorating takes a backseat to comfort. I think we did both pretty well, if you ask me!
Classic Design… With A Little Packers Flare
With three boys in a room, I like to use a combination of neutral colors and textures to make it feel comfortable and appealing to all my boys’ tastes. Luckily, they aren’t too picky, but I wanted their room to not feel too kitschy and grow with them as they got older.
Of course, it had to have a little Green Bay Packers flare since this is their all-time favorite team and they LOVE watching the games. I painted the walls a more muted Packer green but added a couple of really cool memorabilia pieces they love.
All About Their Beds
As moms, I know we get obsessed with little details in our kid’s lives and for me, it’s their beds. I scoured the internet for the perfect bed frame that would be upholstered, but also not too girly. These gray upholstered bed frames are exactly what I wanted. They feel sophisticated and expensive, but also not too mature for my younger boys.
As for their bedding, of course, I used Beddy’s. Since they are younger, the zip-up comforter makes it easy to have them make their beds every day without any hassle. Plus, they think the fabric is really soft and comfortable. If you’re curious to learn more about Beddy’s – check out my review here.
How I Make A Boys Room Feel Comfortable
Designing a cozy and comfortable space for boys’ rooms can sometimes come across as too stark or overly character heavy. What I feel really makes a difference is the deliberate effort to use color and texture together. We used a few playful patterns to bring some youth into space.
Starting with the furniture, I added warmth using a medium-toned wooden dresser and accent cabinet for their toys. Both of these pieces are gorgeous but are not nearly as expensive as they look. With young boys, I don’t want to put in anything too pricey until they get older. They added a nice warm tone to the space that felt very cozy.
To subtly contrast the warmth of the furniture, I then added a huge plaid accent rug made up of different shades of gray. It has much more depth in person than in the photos online, so it paired very nicely with the beds and made a nice compliment.
Lastly, I added in a few accessories, like the giant black side table lamp, to act as both functional and neutral. I try not to over-decorate their space so they get an opinion and it doesn’t feel too cluttered. Typically my motto for their rooms is less is more.
Overall, I love the vibe of this space and think it’s a great little boys’ room design idea. As they get older, I’m sure it’s going to change, but for now, it’s perfect for them.
