Grandmillennial Style: What It IS & What It ISN’T!

DIY & Home Design· My Favorite Things

15 May

One of the best compliments I receive about my home is that it feels like a reflection of me. When someone sends me a photo of home with a style similar to mine and a note that says “this looks like it could be your home!”, I feel a sense of pride because I know I’m on the right track.

Describing my style can be difficult – it has both traditional and modern pieces with a Parisian influence. You’ll see a lot of black and white, but I’m also not afraid of colors or patterns.

Today on the blog, I’ll be chatting all about the grandmillennial style that reflects just about every corner of my home. While it took a really long time to narrow down my taste into something specific, I love this beautiful combination of traditional character with modern touches.

Finding My Design Taste

Honing in on my specific design preferences has taken years. With the burst of sharing home decor online, I fell in love with everything, which meant I could never make a decision.

Oftentimes, it felt like my home was a cluster of different pieces without any fluidity throughout. I would walk into a room and like it, but never feel as if the space was actually mine.

Slowly but surely, I stopped looking for so much inspiration online (although I still do frequently) and began to trust my instincts more. Instead of questioning why I was drawn to specific things, I gave myself the freedom to embrace it.

Eventually, my tastes began to mature and I started seeing patterns in my taste. Above all, there was always a sense of character into what I wanted. Although I didn’t know the name for it at the time, I was refining the grandmillennial style into something perfect for my home!

What Is GrandmillenNial Style?

I was determined to find a name for the style I was so obsessed with- turns out it’s called grandmillennial! Coined officially in 2019 in a House Beautiful article, gradmillennial style is a mix of textures, rich fabrics and patterns, but most of all antique furniture and accessories.

I never felt the need to put a label on my design choices because truthfully – I just like what I like! Articulating my style has helped me to find inspiration, furniture, paint colors, and fellow designers who appreciate my taste in home decor.

This was quite surprising to see at first, since so much of interior design leans to a more sleek and minimalist look. Turns out, grandmillennial style continues to grow in popularity as a direct contrast to the sleek and minimalist modern trends we’ve been seeing.

While I appreciate and frequently use a modern touch in my home, I’m not afraid to layer in pieces to make the space feel complete. Nothing feels better than walking around and feeling grounded in the space I’m in- like it’s truly mine.

My Favorite Grandmillennial Style Pieces

Now that my style was easy to define, everything in my home became more cohesive. Finally, I can walk from room to room and see how certain pieces match to others- it creates such an inviting atmosphere.

These are a few of my go-to grandmillennial style pieces:

  • Rugs/runners with rich colors
  • Intricate gold frames for pictures and mirrors
  • Mixing wood tones in furniture pieces
  • Pillows with ruffles
  • Any and all family heirlooms

Not sure how to start embracing the grandmillennial style? Go to an antique store! Some of my very favorite design choices have come from seeing what’s available- and talking to the owners themselves.

Still Including A Modern Touch

While the grandmillennial style is here to stay in my home, I still opt for many popular pieces I see during my design browsing on Instagram. What makes this specific style so unique is the freedom to like what you like! Nothing looks out of place with grandmillennial because it’s a curated collection of items you love.

I love your whole esthetic! I have some antique pieces from my parents I’ve mixed with black & white. I have a large bookcase with a painted dark accent wall inspired by your house in Arizona. (#13 I think)
