Color Drenching | How To Make It Work

DIY & Home Design· Monarch Colonial· The Monarch Revival

1 Sep

When it comes to design, sometimes the boldest moves make the biggest impact. One design trend I’ve fallen completely in love with is color drenching. It’s a technique that can feel daring at first, but once you see the results, it just clicks.

If you’ve been following along with our Monarch Revival projects, you’ve likely seen me use this technique a few times already. Today, I want to break down what color drenching is, how I’ve used it in some of our favorite spaces, and how you can try it in your own home.

What Is Color Drenching?

Color drenching is when you paint a room top to bottom in a single color. And I mean everything; the walls, the trim, the ceiling, the doors (and sometimes even the furniture). Instead of breaking up a room with contrasting trim or a white ceiling, you allow one shade to wash over the space completely.

The result is an immersive, high-end look that feels intentional and cohesive. Depending on the color you choose, it can make a room feel cozy and moody or sleek and modern.

Why Color Drenching Works

One of the biggest reasons I love this technique is because it takes away distractions. When you eliminate contrasting trim and ceiling colors, your eye doesn’t bounce around the room. Instead, the focus shifts to the shape of the space, the texture of the furniture, and the details you’ve layered in.

It’s also one of the best ways to create a mood. Dark colors feel more dramatic, while mid-tone colors feel warm and cozy.

The hardest part is simply deciding to do it and finding a color you love enough to use everywhere. Once that’s settled, the process itself is easier than most people expect. Since everything gets painted the same color, you don’t have to stress over cutting perfect lines where walls meet ceilings or trim. It’s a forgiving approach with a big impact.

How We Used Color Drenching in the Monarch Revival Home Theatre

Paint Color: Behr Carbon

One of my favorite examples of color drenching is our Monarch Revival Home Theatre.

We leaned into deep, moody tones to create that cinematic feel. By covering the walls, trim, and ceiling in the same dark paint, the room feels completely immersive. It was the perfect way to add drama while keeping the vibe cozy and comfortable for movie nights.

The uniform color also helps the screen stand out and makes the whole room feel cohesive. It set the stage (literally) for a true theatre experience, which was exactly what we wanted for that space.

How We Used Color Drenching in the Basement Kitchenette

Paint Color: Sherwin-Williams Florence Midnight Blue

The basement kitchenette was another perfect opportunity to try color drenching for a whole new feel. We went with Florence Midnight Blue on the cabinets and carried that same deep tone onto the trim and surrounding finishes. By repeating the color throughout, the kitchenette feels so much more intentional and custom.

What I love about this example is how the bold color grounds the space while still tying in beautifully with the nearby mudroom and living areas. On Instagram, I shared how this part of the house evolved from “just a functional spot” into one of my favorite corners. All that built-in storage and bold cabinetry? It now looks like a design moment, not an afterthought.

Color Drenching in the Monarch Revival Music Room

Paint Color: Behr Ash Blue

The Monarch Revival Music Room is one of my favorite examples of color drenching with a very different outcome than the basement kitchenette or theatre. Instead of going moody or dramatic, I chose Behr Ash Blue. By carrying this color across the walls, trim, and even the ceiling, the room feels bright, expansive, and calm.

Because the room is drenched in one light shade, the piano and artwork become the stars of the show. One of the highlights of this room is the butterfly wall, which gives the space a gallery-like effect. Against the soft white, the photos stand out beautifully, almost like an art installation.

Tips for Choosing the Right Color

If you’re thinking about trying color drenching in your own home, here are a few things to consider:

  • Lighting matters. Darker colors thrive in rooms with some natural light, but even windowless rooms can work if you want a cozy, dramatic feel.
  • Think about function. A theatre or bedroom might lean darker, while a dining room or office could benefit from a rich mid-tone.
  • Don’t be afraid of bold shades. Jewel tones, navy, black, and even earthy greens or browns can all work beautifully.
  • Test your paint. Try swatches on multiple walls and look at them during different times of day. Undertones will shift with lighting.

Color Drenching FAQ

  • Is color drenching too risky for a small space?
Not at all. Even small rooms can benefit. Dark colors can make a space feel cozy, while lighter colors open it up.
  • Will my ceiling feel heavy if it’s the same color as the walls?
It depends on your color choice. Light shades keep ceilings feeling airy, while dark shades create drama and intimacy.
  • Can I color-drench with furniture, too?
Yes! Carrying the color onto built-ins or furniture can unify the room even more, like we did in the basement kitchenette.
  • Do I need professional help to color drench?
Not necessarily. With careful prep and quality paint, most DIYers can tackle a single-color space successfully.
  • What colors work best for color drenching?
It depends on your vibe. Dark jewel tones, rich neutrals, or crisp whites all work—pick a color that matches the mood you want to create.

Color drenching might feel like a big commitment, but trust me, it’s just paint! Whether you go bold and dark or rich and colorful, the impact is undeniable. It’s one of those design decisions that instantly makes a space feel elevated and finished.

If you’ve been wanting to try something bold but aren’t sure where to start, color drenching is a great option. Start with a smaller room, like a powder bath, office, or guest room, and see how you feel living with it. You might just fall in love with the effect like I did.

Have you ever tried color drenching in your home? I’d love to hear how it turned out for you in the comments!
